A Historic Landmark Reimagined: From Civic Utility to Cultural Icon

Waterworks is proudly housed in the Sarasota Water Works Building, an enduring symbol of the city’s architectural and civic legacy. Located at 1005 North Orange Avenue, this two-story red brick structure was originally built in 1926 as Sarasota’s waterworks pumping station and administrative office. Today, it has been thoughtfully restored and repurposed into a refined social and business club—where historic character meets contemporary comfort.

Mediterranean Revival with Industrial Grace

Beyond its practical origins, the building stands as a distinguished example of Mediterranean Revival architecture—an industrial interpretation rendered in red brick, a material emblematic of Sarasota’s civic buildings of the era. The eastern façade features elegant elliptical and rounded archways on the ground level, topped by rows of metal casement windows with continuous sills. A hipped roof clad in two-tone terra cotta barrel tiles is crowned by a copper-clad polygonal cupola—a utilitarian vent elevated into a striking architectural detail.

Original Westinghouse light fixtures still flank the entrance, while the surrounding grounds have been thoughtfully landscaped with palm trees and native plantings, softening the structure’s industrial profile. Subtly displayed above the east-facing balcony is the monogram “SWW”—a proud nod to Sarasota Water Works and the city’s early civic ambition.

A Legacy of Innovation and Preservation

Sarasota’s journey to modern infrastructure began at its incorporation in 1902, when residents still relied on shallow wells and cisterns. A successful bond referendum in 1909 paved the way for a municipal water and sewage system. Following a destructive fire in 1915, the city recognized the urgent need for improved water pressure, leading to further investments in infrastructure.

In 1924, Ordinance No. 202 authorized $90,000 in bonds to enhance Sarasota’s water system, with strong public support—followed by an additional $150,000 bond issue in 1925, passed without a single dissenting vote. Construction of the waterworks facility began shortly after, with contracts awarded for a steel-reinforced, fireproof pumphouse, reservoirs, and support structures. The site became a cornerstone of Sarasota’s growing urban landscape.

In 1984, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and in 2004, it received local landmark designation, solidifying its status as one of Sarasota’s most treasured historic assets. Today, the structure remains remarkably intact—an enduring testament to civic vision, architectural integrity, and the power of thoughtful preservation.

Today, the space has been thoughtfully reimagined—preserving its historic character while integrating refined modern touches. From its arched windows and exposed brickwork to its curated interiors and elevated amenities, Waterworks offers a unique setting where Sarasota’s past and present meet.

Whether you’re here to connect, create, or celebrate, Waterworks provides a distinctive backdrop unlike any other in the city.
